A low chemical way to clean a washing machine is to add a cup of hydrogen peroxide or 1/2 cup of baking soda to 2 cups of white distilled vinegar to an empty washing machine and run through a cycle. At the end of cycle  dry around the washer door opening, flexible gasket, and door glass.  Check for any trapped dirt or residue in seals or gaskets, and remove as necessary – this will remove a home of mold and mildew.
